English Learners
EL Program Goals:
The goals of the Bullock County School District’s English Language Program (ESL) are to ensure that:
- English learners achieve full proficiency in English quickly and effectively, reaching parity with native speakers.
- English learners, within a reasonable period of time, achieve success through demonstration of mastery of the same rigorous College and Career Readiness Standards in the classroom and on required assessments that are expected of all students.
- Classroom teachers and administrators understand and accept the specific language acquisition needs of English learners and actively seek ways to better serve this population.
- Non-English speaking parents are given the opportunity to participate in their child's education on an equal basis with English-speaking peers. This includes, whenever possible, providing communications in a language and format that parents can understand, timely updates on their child's language acquisition progress, and opportunities for parents to engage in and further their learning.
These goals aim to provide equal educational opportunities for students who come from non-English language Backgrounds (NELB) and those who are Limited-English Proficient. The focus is on helping all English Learners (ELs) develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English to a level of proficiency that enables them to compete academically with their English-speaking peers. Additionally, these goals facilitate access for ELs to participate in mainstream school activities.
